Well once upon a time, this town had a name Built the girders for the buildings that you climb everyday But the well went dry and the crops all died Now there ain't much to show you but a highway sign But I swear to that statue in the square That there used to be something there But now there ain't no jobs in steeltown Not anymore No jobs in steeltown No not anymore Well, businessman in business suit He used lots of big words like "economic" and "boom" There's tons of waste that needs a place Well, we've got the money if you've got the space And besides, you need to be revitalized And your workers need Nine-To-Fives And hey, it's good for jobs in steeltown Not like before More jobs in steeltown No, not like before Well it once was steel, now it's iron bars They need food-spooners, janitors, and prison guards And they look out and I look in Sometimes I forget who the prisoner is But it's fine cause their numbers are on the rise Bad bad guy's got another side And hey, it's good for jobs in steeltown For the working and poor For jobs in steeltown For the working and poor From Wall Street to Main Street To the yet-to-be-named street Child, connect the dots and see We all live on the same street Well, the day's gonna come when the well goes dry The executives will pack up and say goodbye And they'll smile and wave And we'll say, "Wait! You forgot your pile of toxic waste!" Hey, we got families to raise This is where I gotta plant my grave But no, there ain't no jobs No there ain't no jobs in steeltown Not anymore Not like before For the working and poor No jobs in steeltown No not anymore

The Barrel 04:29
My candy shop's a factory left in the woods to die Beneath this settled dust, a fertile field of treasure lies We the scavengers are hunting for the beautiful decay From the bottom of the barrel At the market for the fleas Stale boxcars on their railroads Won over by the weeds Raid the scrapyard like a garden Wring life from rusty bones My candy shop is a vacant lot Where anything may grow Weeping clowns with cracklin' brows piled in the old arcade Now the children are all workers still dreaming about play While the freaks stomp through the wasteland Pulling flowers from the graves Like a vessel underwater Old mills and broken glass Like a pick-up in the backyard Tree winding through the cab This takes me down the backroads From the mansion to the shack From the bottom of the barrel Here's something someone saved And we bring it to the table Wonder what we're gonna make Your scrapyard, my garden Or so the saying goes You turn water into dead things And I'll make the dead things grow Make the dead things grow Make the dead things grow

about

Two gritty, bluesy, somber ditties about the ups and downs of decay. The a-side ("Jobs in Steeltown") paints a grey picture of working class towns robbed of their work... yet that is only the first verse and feeble "revitalization" attempts follow. The b-side ("The Barrel") is for anyone that loves the sight of weeds growing through pavement cracks. Or, old lengths of wood found in old barns. Or, vacant lots turned into gardens. The list goes on.

about

Mischief Brew Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Emerging from the undead ashes of PA punk troupe The Orphans, Mischief Brew started with a scratchy demo tape in 2000 and has since spread the good word of anarchy, hilarity, and rebellion across state lines and even the Atlantic Ocean a few times. We've managed to exist for over 13 years in one form or another by kissing nobody's ass and doing everything ourselves, for the most part. No rules! ... more
